Psalms 132:8Sefaria

A profound appeal is made for God to establish His permanent presence on earth. These words were originally spoken as the carriers of the Ark reached the site of the Temple, and King Solomon later echoed them, with slight variations, during the dedication of the First Temple The primary approach among commentators is that the plea for God to rise is metaphorical. It serves as a request for Him to leave behind the temporary locations where the Tabernacle once wandered from tent to tent, and to finally enter His permanent home.

Moving into a state of rest symbolizes entering an eternal house where Divine providence will remain permanently and the proper order of service can be maintained This newfound rest marks the end of a turbulent era of wandering, a time when the Ark was frequently carried out to battle. It signifies a transition into a state of everlasting stability

The appeal is directed specifically toward God's glory and His revealed presence He is asked to dwell alongside the Ark as it is brought into the Holy of Holies. The Ark is uniquely associated with strength because it demonstrated God's power and might, most notably by causing the downfall of the Philistines after they took it captive [מצודת דוד].

On a deeper conceptual level, this arrival represents a perfect union. Before the Temple was built, the Divine presence was divided. The Tabernacle stood in various temporary locations such as Shiloh, Nov, and Gibeon, while the Ark wandered separately from place to place. With the arrival at this final place of rest, God and the Ark are finally united, dwelling together as one in a permanent location [אלשיך].
