תהלים, פרק קל״ב, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 132:9Sefaria

כֹּהֲנֶ֥יךָ יִלְבְּשׁוּ־צֶ֑דֶק וַחֲסִידֶ֥יךָ יְרַנֵּֽנוּ׃

A grand vision of establishing a permanent service in the Temple centers on the exact roles of God's servants as the Ark of the Covenant is brought to its final resting place. Through divine inspiration, David foresaw this future moment and offered a prayer for the occasion. He envisioned the day when his son Solomon would bring the Ark into the Holy of Holies and ask God to choose that sacred space forever [רד״ק, אלשיך].

The focus first turns to the sons of Aaron, the priests, whose very clothing is defined by righteousness. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers directly to the physical priestly garments. However, there are different perspectives on why the clothing earns this specific description. Some explain that the garments themselves serve to atone for sinners, effectively returning the people to a state of righteousness [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective links this clothing to the priests' broader social and spiritual responsibilities, as they served as the teachers and righteous judges of the Israelites [אבן עזרא]. Beyond their practical function, the outer garments also act as a powerful symbol. They represent the good character traits, honest behavior, and pure speech that envelop the soul of a priest while he performs his sacred duties [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Alongside the priests stand the members of the tribe of Levi, who are identified as God's pious servants. The commentators agree on this identification, noting that it traces back to the blessing Moses originally gave to the tribe [מאירי]. In the Temple, the Levites serve as the musicians and singers. Their designated role is to sing and play the daily songs of praise that accompany the offering of sacrifices [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, מאירי].

Yet, despite the magnificent sight of the priests in their garments of righteousness and the Levites lifting their voices in song, tradition reveals a striking detail about the Temple's actual dedication. At that moment, all the musical praise and dedicated service of the Levites were not enough to open the gates so the Ark of the Covenant could be brought inside. The ceremony was only completed, and the heavy Temple doors finally swung open, when King Solomon prayed and specifically invoked the merit of his father, David [אלשיך].
