תהלים, פרק קל״ב, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 132:2Sefaria

אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִ֭שְׁבַּע לַֽיהֹוָ֑ה נָ֝דַ֗ר לַאֲבִ֥יר יַעֲקֹֽב׃

King David possessed a deep commitment and immense dedication to establishing a permanent dwelling place for God. This desire drove him with such overwhelming urgency that he bound himself by a strict oath and vow, refusing to enjoy the comforts of his own home or a peaceful night of sleep until he achieved this goal [מאירי, מלבי״ם]. He directed this powerful promise to the exalted God, addressing Him as the ultimate authority and strength of Jacob [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific mention of Jacob in the context of building God's home carries profound historical significance. One perspective focuses on the act of making a promise. Jacob was the first person recorded to have made a vow to God, which he successfully fulfilled at a site he named the House of God. By invoking Jacob, David walks in his ancestor's footsteps, hoping God will grant him the strength to complete his own vow just as He did for Jacob [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

Alternatively, this connection traces back to the discovery of the site itself. Jacob was the first to experience a prophetic dream revealing the exact location of the future Temple, a place perfectly aligned with the heavenly throne, which he called the gate of heaven. While Abraham had previously acted at Mount Moriah during the binding of Isaac, it was not established then that this would be the chosen site for all future generations. Jacob recognized the profound holiness of the area and erected a monument, yet the exact location remained hidden from the public until David's era. Therefore, as David searches for the precise spot where the Divine Presence will rest, he calls out to the God of Jacob, the very God who supported Jacob through his hardships and originally revealed the sacred location to him [רד״ק].
