Psalms 149:9Sefaria

לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת בָּהֶ֨ם ׀ מִשְׁפָּ֬ט כָּת֗וּב הָדָ֣ר ה֭וּא לְכׇל־חֲסִידָ֗יו הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃ {פ}

The culmination of divine justice against the nations is presented not as an abstract, heavenly event, but as a physical reality carried out by the believers themselves. This active participation serves as a source of deep honor for them. The judgment they execute is based on decrees that were already established. This refers either to the punishments promised beforehand in the Torah and the Prophets [רד״ק, מאירי], or to an exact, recorded accounting where every individual receives the precise penalty they deserve for their past sins [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Since King David speaks of a judgment that is already recorded, a question arises regarding how he could reference prophecies of destruction that had not yet been spoken or written during his lifetime. The primary approach among commentators is that David was prophesying about the End of Days and the era of redemption. When that future generation finally arrives to carry out the justice, the decrees will have already been documented and widely known for a very long time [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Another perspective suggests that the written foundation the faithful rely on is simply the core biblical promise that God will cause enemies to fall by the hands of His people [אלשיך].

The individuals tasked with this mission are the people of Israel, the chosen nation [רד״ק, מאירי]. At first glance, taking vigorous, physical action to execute justice in this world does not seem to fit naturally with the spiritual service and songs of praise usually associated with holy spaces. Nevertheless, carrying out this task serves as a mark of true beauty and glory for God's faithful [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. The distinct honor lies in the method of victory. God does not strike down the enemies on His own through sudden miracles, nor does He act solely in response to passive prayer. Instead, He specifically chooses to enact His justice through His followers, clearly demonstrating to the world that they hold power over their adversaries [אלשיך].

Ultimately, that future day of reckoning will become a crowning glory for the nation [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. In light of this promised justice and the profound respect the people will achieve, they are openly invited to praise God and offer their deep gratitude for the honor He has given them [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי].
