The experience of defeat and vulnerability brings a deep pain that goes beyond mere physical loss. The suffering and shame reach a breaking point through a harsh combination of public verbal humiliation and physical persecution. The verbal attacks are spoken maliciously and out in the open [אבן עזרא]. This public disgrace brings profound humiliation [מצודת ציון]. More than just personal insults, these attacks specifically target faith and religion [מלבי״ם]. The enemies direct their mockery at God Himself, taunting the victims by asking where their God is in their time of need [אלשיך].

Alongside this verbal assault is relentless physical persecution. The enemies actively chase down their victims to inflict harm [מצודת דוד]. They seek to cause damage and exact revenge [רד״ק]. They do not just attack; they present themselves as righteous avengers. Driven by anger, they act as though the victims had actually wronged them, pretending that their cruelty is a justified act of retribution [מצודת ציון, מאירי].

While these two forms of suffering happen together, a unique perspective views them as a contrast in pain. In this understanding, the deep shame and agony of hearing God being blasphemed and insulted actually outweigh the physical torment caused by the enemy. The emotional devastation of listening to the abuser's voice is far worse than facing the physical wrath of the avenger [אלשיך].
