כִּ֤י לֹ֣א בְקַשְׁתִּ֣י אֶבְטָ֑ח וְ֝חַרְבִּ֗י לֹ֣א תוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃

True salvation from exile requires a profound realization that human bravery and military might are ultimately powerless. Deliverance depends entirely on the help of God. Although this is a collective national experience, the declaration is voiced in the singular, describing an individual who refuses to trust in personal weapons. The primary approach among commentators is that this singular voice represents the entire exiled nation speaking as one unified entity. Alternatively, this singular focus highlights specific groups within the people: the masses of archers and the elite war heroes. Even these mighty warriors must individually confess that their physical strength will not save them [אבן עזרא].

The inability to rely on physical arms stems from both practical and profound historical realities. On a practical level, the Israelites living in exile are no longer trained in the art of war, making it impossible for them to trust in their combat skills [מלבי״ם]. However, there is a deeper reason tied to the very identity of the nation. The sword is fundamentally contrary to the essence of Jacob; instead, it is the defining blessing given to Esau. The Israelites cannot expect to conquer their enemies by adopting the very tools that characterize those enemies [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. While their ancestor Jacob once possessed the strength to act and conquer physically, the exiled nation has lost this capacity and must rely completely on Divine intervention.

Because physical weapons hold no value for the exiled people, these tools of war are transformed into spiritual concepts. Looking back to Jacob's ancient claim that he captured his portion with his sword and bow, the weapons of Israel are understood not as instruments of physical destruction, but as tools of the spirit. In this light, the sword represents the power of prayer, while the bow symbolizes the continuous pleas and requests directed toward God [תורה תמימה].
