תהלים, פרק מ״ד, פסוק א׳

Psalms 44:1Sefaria

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ ׀ לִבְנֵי־קֹ֬רַח מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃

This prophetic and thoughtful national prayer addresses the long exile of the Jewish people [מאירי, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. At its center is a sharp contrast between a glorious past and a painful present. In ancient times, the nation experienced God's direct providence and miracles, but in exile, they have fallen into a low state, facing numerous troubles and becoming a disgrace to the surrounding nations [מאירי, מלבי״ם].

Originally directed to the leader of the musical choir, the song carries an instructional purpose [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It functions as an educational piece [ביאור שטיינזלץ], while also serving to awaken the human heart, urging people to pay close attention and reflect on the events that are destined to unfold [מאירי].

Despite their severe decline and ongoing suffering, the unique destiny of the people remains permanently tied to their devotion to God. Even at their absolute lowest point, the nation refuses to abandon its faith [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because of this, their plea for salvation rests on three main foundations. First, they ask God to save them for the sake of His own honor, ensuring it is not profaned. Second, they rely on the merit of their steadfast, unbroken faith throughout the exile. Finally, they appeal to His kindness, reasoning that the more humiliated the nation has become, the more fitting it is for Him to extend profound kindness and redeem them [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, the entire purpose of this prayer is to plead for an end to the exile and to restore the relationship with God to its original, unbroken state [מאירי].
