תהלים, פרק מ״ד, פסוק כ״א

Psalms 44:21Sefaria

אִם־שָׁ֭כַחְנוּ שֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַנִּפְרֹ֥שׂ כַּ֝פֵּ֗ינוּ לְאֵ֣ל זָֽר׃

Faith is often tested most severely in times of crisis, suffering, and persecution. During these dark periods, a profound tension arises between a person's inner loyalty to God and the outward actions they might be forced to take. This ongoing struggle directly mirrors earlier declarations made by the faithful. The idea of forgetting God stands in sharp contrast to their previous claim of always remembering Him. Similarly, the act of lifting hands in prayer to a foreign deity represents a stark departure from their earlier promise to never stray from His path [אבן עזרא].

There are different ways to understand the nature of this spiritual challenge. One approach views the situation as a rhetorical expression of absolute devotion, asking in disbelief whether it is even possible that the faithful could ever forget God and pray to an idol [מצודת דוד].

However, another perspective frames this as a very real psychological and spiritual battle. When believers find themselves enduring deep distress while their enemies live in comfort and peace, a genuine fear emerges. The crushing weight of their suffering might tempt them to abandon God and turn toward the deities of those who oppress them [רד״ק].

Taking a different angle, this struggle can also be understood in the harsh context of religious persecution and forced conversion. In extreme circumstances, individuals might actually commit the physical act of praying to a foreign god [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, this is done solely out of coercion and the desperate need to survive. It remains a purely superficial, outward display. Deep within their hearts, their inner faith remains untouched, and they never truly forget God [אלשיך, מאירי].
