תהלים, פרק מ״ד, פסוק י׳

Psalms 44:10Sefaria

אַף־זָ֭נַחְתָּ וַתַּכְלִימֵ֑נוּ וְלֹא־תֵ֝צֵ֗א בְּצִבְאוֹתֵֽינוּ׃

A sudden and painful shift occurs here, moving from the memory of glorious past victories and divine salvation to the harsh reality of current exile. The primary approach among commentators notes a severe decline in the people's condition. It is not merely that salvation has ceased, but rather that it has been replaced by active divine abandonment, as God has left the people completely in the hands of their enemies [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

This creates a bitter irony compared to the past. In ancient times, God brought shame upon the enemies of the Israelites, but now the Israelites are the ones absorbing the humiliation [אבן עזרא]. This deep sense of shame stems from the fact that the people had proudly told the surrounding nations that God would save them and lead their armies out of exile. When that salvation is delayed, their enemies mock them, tauntingly asking what happened to their promises and where their Savior is [רד״ק].

This state of abandonment represents a complete withdrawal of divine providence. When their groups of warriors go into battle [מצודת ציון], God no longer intervenes on their behalf. Instead, He leaves their fate to natural events and the random chance of victory or defeat [מלבי״ם]. Looking at the broader experience of the exile, the people are entirely stripped of the direct, guiding care that used to accompany their journeys and encampments [מאירי].

In contrast to this description of suffering, a different perspective views this not as a complaint, but as a powerful declaration of unconditional faith. Even in the face of such hardship, the message is one of absolute devotion: even when God abandons them, allows them to be humiliated, and refuses to accompany their armies, the people will still continue to praise and thank His name forever [רש״י, מצודת דוד].
