תהלים, פרק ע׳, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 70:3Sefaria

A desperate plea arises for the public downfall of those who harbor hostility and malice. As adversaries plot their attacks, a vivid request is made for their complete humiliation and defeat. The primary approach among commentators is that this profound shame will take hold the moment God steps in to help. When the enemies witness God's intervention, they will realize their hopes are completely dashed and that victory is impossible [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

This deep embarrassment naturally leads to a physical and emotional retreat [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. On a practical level, this means the attackers will back away, abandoning the wicked schemes they had planned to carry out [רד״ק, מאירי]. On a psychological level, it reflects human nature; a disgraced person instinctively steps backward to hide their face from onlookers [מצודת דוד].

The hostility of these adversaries is not uniform but is divided into distinct groups. The primary approach among commentators is that this reflects different levels of intended harm. One group seeks actual death, aiming to end the victim's life entirely. A second group harbors a lesser, though still malicious, intent—they simply wish for his suffering and hardship without death, or they merely hold evil thoughts in their hearts [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. However, when God delivers swift salvation, His protection will be so undeniable that both hostile groups will ultimately be moved to repent [אלשיך].

Alongside this practical interpretation, another perspective views these two groups through a spiritual lens. In this approach, the more severe enemies are those who try to corrupt the soul, the divine spark within a person, by leading it to sin. Because their threat is spiritual, their punishment is the heavy burden of absolute shame. Conversely, the second group only seeks to inflict physical harm upon the body, and as a result, their consequence is simply to be driven backward in retreat [חומת אנך].
