Psalms 70:4Sefaria

Moments of personal downfall are often made heavier by the mockery of enemies. When a person is in distress, fleeing, or failing, those who wish them harm often react with loud cries of malicious joy and cheer This cruel celebration might even involve spreading slander and false testimonies about terrible things the victim supposedly did [מלבי״ם]. The repeated cries of joy from these attackers reflect the different types of people who celebrate another's ruin: those who actively seek to take the victim's life, and those who simply want to see them suffer [אלשיך].

In the face of this cruelty, there is a plea for a dramatic reversal of fate, where the enemies' celebration turns into deep humiliation. The primary approach among commentators is that this reversal is a direct, measure-for-measure consequence. Because these enemies intentionally brought shame and pain to the victim, their ultimate punishment is to retreat in absolute disgrace Others view this retreat quite literally, explaining that the attackers will be forced to turn around and walk back on the exact same path they used to approach, completely humiliated by their failure

Taking a completely different approach, [אלשיך] sees this moment of defeat not just as a punishment, but as an opportunity for profound spiritual repair. When the enemies realize that God is actively helping the victim and that their malicious plots have failed, they are struck with a deep sense of shame. Rather than simply serving as a punishment, this shame becomes the starting point for their purification. Through the guilt they feel over their actions, they earn help from Heaven and are guided toward complete repentance.
