תהלים, פרק ע׳, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 70:5Sefaria

In sharp contrast to the defeat and shame of the enemies, a vivid picture of victory and gladness emerges for those who remain loyal to God. This happiness goes beyond the simple relief of surviving a threat; it is a profound celebration of God revealing His greatness to the world and performing miracles for those who seek His protection.

The primary approach among commentators is that the happiness of those who seek God serves as a direct opposite to the ruin of their enemies [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their joy is deeply rooted in experiencing God's salvation [מצודת דוד]. They are filled with delight when they witness God actively saving and shielding the people who place their trust in Him [מלבי״ם].

However, another perspective suggests that there are two distinct groups of people, each representing a different level of spiritual devotion. The first group consists of those who seek God and are happy simply because they were rescued from danger and saw justice brought upon their enemies. The second group consists of individuals who deeply love the very concept of salvation, representing a much higher spiritual level. These individuals are not focused on their own personal, physical safety. Instead, their ultimate goal is the spiritual redemption of the Divine Presence from its state of exile [אלשיך].

Because these devoted individuals deeply love and anticipate this complete salvation, they are assured of being saved at all times. As a result, they constantly declare God's immense greatness whenever they experience His rescue [מצודת דוד]. This ongoing praise is a natural response to God continually showing His power and performing new miracles for those who love Him [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. The ultimate purpose of announcing God's greatness is to ensure that His power is recognized and celebrated across the entire world the moment the Divine Presence is finally freed from exile [אלשיך].
