Psalms 72:13Sefaria

יָ֭חֹס עַל־דַּ֣ל וְאֶבְי֑וֹן וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹת אֶבְיוֹנִ֣ים יוֹשִֽׁיעַ׃

True leadership is not measured by military might or political power, but by a profound commitment to the most vulnerable members of society. An ideal king is defined by his deep compassion for the weak, providing a level of care that goes far beyond standard government protection to address both the material and spiritual needs of the destitute.

His rule is characterized by genuine mercy and pity [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. This intense focus is directed toward the absolute poorest of the poor, emphasizing the extreme depth of their need [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, this compassion is not limited to his own citizens. It is a universal care that extends to the impoverished and destitute of all other nations as well [אבן עזרא].

The king's rescue of these vulnerable individuals operates on multiple levels. Physically, he steps in to save the weak from anyone who attempts to harm them [מצודת דוד]. Materially, he channels the wealth and gifts he receives as a ruler to supply food and basic living necessities to those who have nothing [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

However, his protection reaches beyond the physical body to save their very souls. The king takes responsibility for their spiritual well-being by teaching the needy moral values and proper behavior [מלבי״ם]. A deeper layer of this spiritual rescue is seen in extreme cases of poverty. If a person is driven by severe hunger and financial distress to rob someone else, the king extends his pity even to the desperate thief. Instead of merely punishing him, the king provides the thief with money and gold to satisfy his hunger, removing the desperate need to sin. In doing so, the king saves the souls of both individuals involved—the victim and the thief—rescuing them both from spiritual ruin [אלשיך].
