Psalms 72:4Sefaria

The ideal form of royal justice operates on multiple levels, blending deep compassion for the most vulnerable members of society with an uncompromising stance against those who exploit them. True justice requires more than merely sitting in a courtroom and delivering verdicts; it demands active, practical intervention to rescue the oppressed.

When the king evaluates the cases of the poor, he actively works to reclaim their rights from those who have wronged them Often, these individuals have fallen into poverty precisely because they were exploited and robbed by their own people [אלשיך]. Out of a profound love for fairness and honesty, the king gives their cases special attention, treating a dispute over a tiny coin with the exact same seriousness as a case involving a massive fortune

Beyond the ordinary poor are the completely destitute—those who have absolutely nothing and must rely entirely on charity to survive [מלבי״ם]. For the children of these severely impoverished individuals, standard legal proceedings are simply not enough. The king must step in with acts of pure kindness and mercy [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He actively ensures they have food and basic living necessities [מלבי״ם]. In some cases, he even steps in to pay off the debts of destitute people who were forced to borrow from the wealthy and have no means to repay [אלשיך].

However, royal justice is not composed solely of gentleness and mercy. The king is equally required to act with fierce might to punish those who commit injustice He must completely break and shatter the power of the oppressors—those who rob, extort, or steal from others through deceit and secrecy Using his wealth and authority, the king fearlessly destroys the influence of these corrupt individuals [אלשיך]. Furthermore, he applies his great wisdom to uncover and expose even those who manage to hide their oppressive actions in the shadows [אבן עזרא].
