Psalms 72:17Sefaria

A vision of an eternal legacy emerges, painting a portrait of an ideal leader whose influence crosses the boundaries of time and space. It is a picture of universal blessing and global admiration that spans across generations and nations. Commentators offer different perspectives on the identity of this figure. One approach suggests it is a description of King Solomon, who would be remembered forever due to his exceptional wealth and wisdom Another perspective views this as a prophecy about the Messiah, a figure whose very essence and name existed even before the world was created

The promise of his enduring name is closely tied to the existence of the sun. The primary approach among commentators is that this guarantees an eternal legacy; as long as the sun continues to shine upon the earth, the king's name will only grow and be spoken of with greatness Beyond mere physical endurance, there is a deeper parallel to how the sun functions. Just as the sun cycles through the sky to banish physical darkness, the leader's legacy will shine brightly to remove spiritual darkness from human souls [מלבי״ם]. Following the Messianic interpretation, the connection to the sun implies something even more profound: the Messiah's name actually predates the world and the creation of the sun itself [אלשיך].

The nature of this leader's enduring presence is understood in a few distinct ways. It is viewed by some as an expression of absolute royalty, authority, and continuous rule Others understand his lasting impact through the lens of family and descendants. His legacy will multiply and flow from one generation to the next. Just as a child preserves the memory of a parent, the king's name will be kept alive forever through the lasting impact of his good deeds In the context of the Messianic era, this continuous life force points toward a future role in awakening those who sleep in the dust, bringing about the resurrection of the dead [אלשיך].

Ultimately, this leader will become the ultimate standard of abundance and success for all of humanity. When people wish to bless themselves or their children, they will use him as the highest measure, praying that God makes them as wise and wealthy as Solomon, or that God blesses them just as He blessed this great king Nations from near and far will praise him and declare him truly fortunate Unlike King David, who suffered from the constant threat of many enemies, this leader will enjoy complete, universal admiration. All nations will praise his wisdom, his capable deeds, and his spiritual success, ultimately finding their own true happiness by following the light of his ways
