תהלים, פרק ע״ה, פסוק ז׳

True human success, status, and salvation are not the product of natural forces, geographic advantages, or human effort. Instead, they rest entirely in the hands of God. The primary approach among commentators is that true elevation and greatness cannot be found simply by scouring the globe. It is useless to chase success by sending trade caravans to the east, the west, or the remote desert in pursuit of wealth [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Greatness does not emerge from endless human striving across the earth [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מנחת שי, מאירי].

Beyond physical travel, the directions of the world serve as symbols for different human advantages. The east, representing a place of origin, symbolizes the circumstances of a person's birth or their family lineage. The west represents the pursuit of wealth through overseas trade. The desert, conceptually linked to speech, stands for wisdom and eloquence. Yet, none of these traits—lineage, wealth, or wisdom—can guarantee a person's status or success, as that power belongs to God alone [אלשיך, מאירי]. Furthermore, human fate is not dictated by astrology or the arrangement of stars governing the four directions of the sky [אבן עזרא, אלשיך].

In contrast, other viewpoints understand the geographic terms literally. They reject the idea that a person can find help, security, or salvation by looking to the physical mountains located in the east, west, south, or north [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Looking at the physical world, the very placement of these mountains is not the result of natural causes, such as the earth's movement or climate conditions. Instead, their locations are determined exclusively by God's decree. Just as God dictates exactly where a physical mountain will rise from the earth, He is the only One who decides which person will be brought low and who will be elevated to greatness [מלבי״ם].
