A functioning human society rests entirely on the pillars of fairness and justice. When a legal system breaks down and those appointed to uphold the law betray their duties, the damage extends far beyond a single act of wrongdoing. It triggers a complete collapse of both social and global order.
The primary approach among commentators is that this profound failure of knowledge and understanding is directed specifically at corrupt judges. This failure occurs on two levels: a lack of basic knowledge gathered through the senses, and a lack of deeper intellectual comprehension [מלבי״ם]. Commentators offer different perspectives on the exact nature of this ignorance. One approach suggests that these judges merely pretend to be ignorant. They remain silent, acting as though they do not see the oppression and injustice happening right in front of them Another perspective explains that the judges fail to grasp the true severity of their sins and the inevitable consequences of their actions A third view argues that the judges genuinely lack knowledge. They are simply unqualified, unable to properly compare legal cases, or they rigidly issue strict rulings without exercising proper judgment [אלשיך, מאירי].
Whatever the root cause of their ignorance, the result is that these leaders walk in darkness. This darkness symbolizes a deep moral blindness, where judges act entirely on personal interests rather than seeking the light of truth [שטיינזלץ]. Often, this blindness is the direct result of accepting bribes, a practice known to blind even the most intelligent and capable individuals Justice serves as the illuminating light of the world, and in its absence, total darkness takes over [מלבי״ם]. Consequently, corrupt judges wander blindly, unaware of the obstacles over which they will inevitably stumble [מצודת דוד].
Because of this distortion of justice, the very foundations of the earth begin to tilt and collapse [מצודת ציון]. In their apathy, these judges do not care that society is crumbling around them, even though their actions make them responsible for this destruction [אבן עזרא]. The collapse happens on two distinct levels. On a natural and social level, justice is the glue that holds civilization together. Without it, people would swallow each other alive, society would be overrun by violence and theft, and the world would face ruin much like the generation of the biblical flood On a spiritual level, when justice is abandoned on earth, God withholds His divine abundance from above [מלבי״ם].
This profound destruction is best understood through the concept that the world stands on three things: justice, truth, and peace. These are not independent elements that can survive on their own. The moment a judge twists the law, he automatically destroys the truth and shatters the peace between the people involved. Therefore, corrupting justice does not merely knock down a single pillar; it sends a shockwave through the entire system, causing all the foundations of the earth to collapse at once
