Above the golden cover of the Ark, special figures were fashioned to represent angels and heavenly creatures. The creation of these forms involved a highly specific method of craftsmanship. They were not made as separate pieces that were later attached to the lid. Instead, they were shaped from the exact same, single block of gold as the cover itself. Through a careful process of striking and hammering, the metal was worked upward until the two distinct angelic figures emerged, standing fully formed at the opposite ends of the cover.
