פרשת ויקהל

Exodus 37:8Sefaria

Crafting the golden cover for the Ark of the Covenant, complete with the winged Cherubim, required supreme artistry. Two completely separate figures had to rise and grow organically out of a single, solid piece of gold, with one positioned at each opposite end [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The physical creation of this masterpiece involved a highly deliberate casting process. Rather than forming a flat plate and hammering it out along its entire length, the artisan concentrated a larger amount of gold at both ends during the initial melting phase. This ensured there was enough raw material pooled at the edges to sculpt the intricate figures directly from the single cast [אור החיים].

Naturally, sculpting two complex figures on opposite sides of a single block would demand the hands of two artisans working simultaneously. Yet, the work was accomplished by a single individual. Miraculously, Bezalel managed to craft both figures together entirely on his own [העמק דבר].

Beyond the practical demands of metalwork, the design carries a profound conceptual message. The biblical tradition subtly obscures the plural nature of the cover's edges to highlight the absolute unity of the Cherubim. Even though they represent duality and face in different directions, they are perceived as one indivisible essence. Together, they form a single, complete unit where neither side holds superiority over the other. This profound equality and unity are perfectly reflected in their posture, as they stand with their faces directed toward one another [רש״ר הירש].
