Exodus 37:16Sefaria

וַיַּ֜עַשׂ אֶֽת־הַכֵּלִ֣ים ׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־הַשֻּׁלְחָ֗ן אֶת־קְעָרֹתָ֤יו וְאֶת־כַּפֹּתָיו֙ וְאֵת֙ מְנַקִּיֹּתָ֔יו וְאֶ֨ת־הַקְּשָׂוֺ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻסַּ֖ךְ בָּהֵ֑ן זָהָ֖ב טָהֽוֹר׃ {פ}

Constructing the Tabernacle involved more than just crafting its central pieces of furniture; it required creating the precise service vessels that allowed those pieces to function properly. The tools associated with the inner table demanded exact measurements to fulfill both their practical roles and their religious purposes.

Belonging to the table's system did not necessarily mean these items rested directly on its surface. Instead, they functioned as part of its broader operation [רש ר הירש]. For instance, certain dishes served as molds to hold the flour or dough before the bread was baked and arranged, never actually sitting on the table itself [רש ר הירש, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A subtle pause in the traditional chanting notes reinforces this idea, suggesting that these tools stand conceptually on their own rather than holding the strict legal status of table attachments [צפנת פענח].

The accompanying items also included small cups for preparing frankincense, alongside a complex support structure designed to hold the stacked bread. This system consisted of vertical pillars standing on either side of the table and thin gold tubes that supported and shielded each layer of bread, though commentators differ on exactly how the original terms map to these specific parts [ביאור שטיינזלץ, העמק דבר].

A shift in the order of these items between God's initial command and their actual construction reveals both practical and religious insights. During the building process, the supporting tubes were crafted before the vertical pillars. From a practical standpoint, the artisans simply could not manufacture the pillars until they knew the exact thickness and measurements of the tubes they would need to hold. Additionally, prioritizing the frankincense cups over the entire support structure hints at a specific Sabbath law. The cups were arranged on the Sabbath day itself, whereas assembling the heavy tubes and pillars was delayed until after the Sabbath to avoid excessive labor and the handling of restricted objects [העמק דבר].
