Exodus 37:17Sefaria

The creation of the golden lampstand marks a profound transition from a purely spiritual vision to the physical crafting of a vessel meant to radiate light and wisdom. The account of its construction closely mirrors the original instructions given to Moses, but it is now adapted to reflect the actual work being done [קאסוטו, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because the focus has shifted to the physical building process, certain details from the original command are left out. The practical purpose of the lampstand—to provide light—and the prophetic image Moses was shown on the mountain are omitted, as those belong to the initial instruction phase and the later assembly of the Tabernacle [קאסוטו]. Additionally, there is no mention of the immense difficulty involved in crafting this complex vessel, a struggle that was highlighted when the command was first given [ברכת אשר על התורה].

The original instructions placed a special emphasis on the material, making it clear that within the Tabernacle, this vessel had to be made exclusively of gold, even though future generations were permitted to use other metals. The record of its creation, however, simply presents the facts, showing how God's command was fulfilled to the letter [אור החיים]. The method of shaping the lampstand was highly specific. It was not poured into a mold, nor was it assembled by attaching separate pieces together. Instead, it was hammered out of a single, solid block of gold. From this one piece of metal emerged its base and its central shaft, along with all the branches. Even the intricate decorations—the cups, knobs, and flowers—were sculpted directly from the same block, ensuring that no parts were glued on or attached using outside materials [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On a deeper level, the lampstand stands as a symbol of wisdom and intellectual enlightenment, the kind that strikes suddenly like a flash of lightning. The human soul is often compared to God's lamp, and the seven individual lamps of the lampstand represent seven foundational types of souls within the Israelites. Each type of soul reveals God in the world in its own distinct way, rooted in one of seven basic human traits and emotions [חומש קה״ת].
