The construction of the Ark of the Covenant was a task demanding immense precision and complexity. Yet, the creation of this sacred object was not merely a matter of technical skill or manual labor. It was driven by a deep inner awakening and a unique wisdom of the heart among the artisans. Because the craftsmen were acting under the direct command of God, their efforts were met with extraordinary blessing and success. The physical labor became remarkably easy; in fact, the work seemed to progress and complete itself almost miraculously [אלשיך].
In practical terms, the physical design of the Ark consisted of a unique layered structure. The requirement to cover the Ark inside and out was not achieved by simply attaching a thin plating of gold over the wood. Instead, the overlay was formed from solid, independent structures. Two separate golden arks were crafted to encase the wooden one. The wooden ark was placed inside a larger, outer golden ark, while a second, smaller golden ark was inserted directly into the hollow space of the wooden one [שטיינזלץ]. Through this method, the wood was entirely enveloped in pure gold from every angle. To complete the magnificent design, a decorative golden crown was fashioned to surround the Ark on all sides.
