Exodus 38:9Sefaria

Constructing the courtyard of the Tabernacle establishes the outer boundary of the sacred space. Engaging with the precise details, measurements, and materials of this structure holds profound spiritual significance. Even in the absence of a standing sanctuary, studying these physical dimensions is considered a great Commandment. This focused learning is viewed as equal to offering physical sacrifices, carrying immense merit and drawing God's presence closer [רבנו בחיי].

The very idea of building a courtyard presents a logical puzzle, as an open space cannot actually be constructed. Instead, the area naturally forms on its own once the surrounding pillars and boundaries are erected. The process is therefore a continuous flow, where the creation of the courtyard is simply the result of assembling its individual parts [ברכת אשר על התורה]. The assembly begins specifically on the southern side. This choice is deliberate, as the south is positioned to the right of anyone entering the area. Additionally, ancient astronomers considered the south to be the head and starting point of all directions, with the north marking the end [רבנו בחיי].

This southern boundary spanned one hundred cubits, which is roughly fifty to sixty meters, and was enclosed by curtains woven from fine twisted linen [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While the instructions for this layout were already presented earlier to establish the proper place for every vessel [ריב״א], the current account details the actual execution. There are minor changes in style and word order between the original command and the final construction, which serve as natural stylistic variations [קאסוטו]. Yet, the lengthy repetition of exact measurements for every single side is highly intentional. Rather than briefly stating that the other sides shared the same dimensions, the detailed account teaches that the builders could not work mechanically. Constructing the sacred boundary required a unique and focused intention for every individual section [שפתי כהן].
