יחזקאל, פרק ו׳, פסוק ב׳

The prophet receives a command to direct his physical and prophetic attention toward the geographic landscape of the land. He is instructed to physically turn his face toward the mountains [מצודת דוד] and speak directly to them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Commentators offer different reasons for why the prophecy is aimed specifically at the mountains. One approach views these peaks as prominent landmarks that represent the entire land, meaning the message is intended for the whole surrounding region [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective focuses on the historical reality of these locations as central sites for pagan worship. The people regularly worshiped idols on high mountains, on hills, and under leafy trees. Therefore, the message is aimed at the mountains to announce the coming destruction of the high places, altars, and statues erected on their slopes, along with the downfall of the idolaters themselves [רד״ק].

Beyond the physical and historical landscape, there is also a spiritual dimension to this command. According to this view, the prophet is not merely talking to physical objects. Every mountain and hill in the world is overseen by a spiritual prince appointed from above, and the prophecy is ultimately directed at these heavenly forces [חומת אנך].
