The penalty for idol worship involves the complete destruction of false religious centers, forging a direct link between the location of the sin and the site of the punishment. The altars, which were once bustling public hubs filled with crowds of worshippers, will be left completely ruined and desolate [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This total emptiness serves as a sharp contrast to their formerly busy atmosphere. The structures will stand abandoned simply because there will be no one left to visit them or burn incense upon them [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].

Along with the altars, the specific statues and symbols dedicated to the worship of the stars and the sun will be shattered. These idols were purposefully set up on the rooftops of houses so they could be fully exposed to the sun's rays [רש״י].

The physical destruction of these sites is accompanied by a grim human toll. The corpses of the Israelites struck down by the sword will be scattered directly in front of their false gods [מלבי״ם]. The language used to describe these idols is highly derogatory, comparing the disgusting statues to bodily waste [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Having the lifeless bodies fall right in front of these repulsive figures is a precise, measure-for-measure consequence. The very spot where the wickedness was committed becomes the exact place where the final punishment is carried out [מצודת דוד].
