The downfall of those who worship false gods unfolds measure for measure, as the very locations they once held sacred become the sites of their ruin. The lifeless bodies of the worshippers [מצודת ציון] face a harsh penalty: they are left exposed directly in front of their idols, denied the dignity of a proper burial [מצודת דוד].

Instead, their remains are scattered around the desolate altars [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This specific fate serves as a direct reflection of their actions. In the past, the people would sacrifice animals to false gods and leave the bones of those offerings scattered before the altars. In response, God acts in kind, ensuring that the worshippers' own bones are scattered across those exact same places [מלבי״ם].
