Genesis 36:10Sefaria

The lineage of Esau traces the origins and early development of leadership within the nation of Edom. The careful cataloging of names is not merely a historical record, but a reflection of the different social classes and inherited rights among the various branches of the family. The broad introduction to this lineage encompasses all of Esau's sons, regardless of whether they were born in the land of Canaan or elsewhere [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite this inclusive opening, the immediate focus narrows specifically to Eliphaz and Reuel, temporarily leaving out Esau's other sons. This selective attention is driven entirely by the future political success of their descendants. The family tree is structured to highlight individuals who eventually became chiefs. Because the primary interest is on leadership, the record begins with the specific sons who produced a large number of these ruling chiefs [העמק דבר].

This strict focus on leadership also explains certain omissions later in the family line. For instance, the grandsons of Esau's wife Oholibamah are completely left out of the later record. While her immediate sons achieved the rank of chief, her grandsons never reached this prominent status [רד״ק]. The reason these specific grandsons failed to become leaders is directly tied to their birthplace. Only the descendants born within the Land of Israel attained high leadership roles, benefiting from the unique merit of the land itself. Because these grandsons were born outside the land, they did not merit this level of authority [העמק דבר].
