Genesis 36:22Sefaria

וַיִּהְי֥וּ בְנֵי־לוֹטָ֖ן חֹרִ֣י וְהֵימָ֑ם וַאֲח֥וֹת לוֹטָ֖ן תִּמְנָֽע׃

The ancient family records of the inhabitants of Seir hold hidden clues about the complex historical shifts that allowed the descendants of Esau to settle in the region. Within this detailed genealogy, a woman named Timna stands out as a rare inclusion. Her presence in the record stems from her significant historical role as the concubine of Esau’s son, Eliphaz, and the mother of Amalek [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Customarily, biblical family lines often identify a woman through her brother [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך]. However, tracing Timna specifically to Lotan, rather than listing her as a sister to all the sons of Seir, raises questions about their relationship. One perspective suggests that Lotan was simply the oldest and most prominent of the brothers, making him the natural point of reference [רשב״ם, חזקוני]. Another approach points to a unique blood tie between them. Timna may have been Lotan’s full sister, sharing both parents, while acting only as a half-sister to the rest of the family. Alternatively, she might have been Lotan’s sister solely through their mother, meaning she was not actually a daughter of Seir the Horite at all [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך].

Beyond family ties, the unfolding events reveal a broader story of political maneuvering and God's providence. When Esau’s family first migrated into the area, the native inhabitants of Seir were deeply divided over how to handle them. Lotan’s family chose to welcome the new arrivals, a political agreement firmly cemented through marriage when Timna, who was raised and educated in Lotan's household, was given to Esau's family. The rest of the brothers firmly opposed this integration. This bitter internal dispute fractured the local population. In the end, the division paved the way for Esau’s descendants to grow in strength, conquer the territory, and completely replace the original inhabitants [העמק דבר].
