אֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו בְּנֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּכ֣וֹר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֤וּף תֵּימָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף אוֹמָ֔ר אַלּ֥וּף צְפ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וּף קְנַֽז׃

The lineage of Esau marks a significant turning point, reflecting the gradual transformation of a single family into a structured, political society of organized tribes. As the family expanded, a new system of governance emerged to manage the growing population.

The primary approach among commentators is that the leaders of these newly formed groups held positions similar to presidents, significant ministers, or governors. They were prominent individuals who stood at the head of a family or a city. These figures wielded immense authority, holding a status that closely resembled royalty, effectively exercising the power of a king without wearing an actual crown [מזרחי].

An important historical distinction surrounds the titles given to these leaders. The names used do not necessarily refer to the original men who founded the families. Instead, they evolved into formal titles of leadership. While the founding father naturally served as the head of the group during the first generation, the system changed as the families multiplied and developed into distinct tribes. The founder's name transformed into an official rank. For instance, whoever ruled over the descendants of Teman simply adopted the formal title of the leader of Teman [מזרחי, שפתי חכמים, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Functioning as local princes, these tribal heads established a strong foundation of power. They successfully maintained their independent and highly respected positions long into the future, preserving their authority even after a formal, unified kingdom was eventually established in the land of Edom [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
