פרשת וישלח

Genesis 36:33Sefaria

וַיָּ֖מׇת בָּ֑לַע וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו יוֹבָ֥ב בֶּן־זֶ֖רַח מִבׇּצְרָֽה׃

The succession of Edomite royalty unfolds with a clear pattern, recording the passing of one ruler and the rise of the next. As power shifts, careful attention is given to the hometown of the newly crowned king. The primary focus centers on the specific identity and deeper significance of the city known as Bozrah.

A straightforward approach suggests that Bozrah is simply a local city situated within the borders of Edom [שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, ancient rabbinic tradition offers a different perspective, identifying Bozrah as a city belonging to the neighboring nation of Moab [רש״י, שד״ל]. This alternative identification raises an interesting question. If Bozrah is a foreign city, why is there a need to highlight the king's foreign origins? Furthermore, since other rulers also have their hometowns recorded, why look for a deeper meaning specifically in this instance?

The search for broader significance is driven by a general principle: whenever a moral lesson can be drawn from the historical record, it must be brought to light [דברי דוד]. Additionally, this specific king is uniquely identified by both his father's name and his hometown, a break from the pattern of the other rulers that demands an explanation [שפתי חכמים].

By pinpointing the exact origins of this leader, a clear message is sent regarding the city's ultimate fate. Because the Moabite city of Bozrah stepped out of its own borders to support another nation, supplying a king to rule over Edom, it tied its destiny to theirs. As a result, when Edom eventually faces judgment and punishment in the future, Bozrah will be held accountable and suffer alongside it [רש״י, קיצור בעל הטורים, שפתי חכמים].
