The detailed family history of Esau begins by naming the children born to him by his wives. Adah gives birth to his firstborn, Eliphaz, and Basemath gives birth to Reuel [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
The way these descendants are introduced reveals a sharp contrast with the family of Jacob. When detailing Jacob's family, the narrative deliberately refers to his children as sons, such as the sons of Leah or the sons of Rachel. This dignified title is awarded because Jacob's children represent the foundation and building blocks of the world. Esau's descendants, however, do not earn this distinction. They are described strictly through the physical act of birth. Rather than being recognized as builders of the world, they are viewed merely as biological offspring, similar in nature to the offspring of animals [קיצור בעל הטורים].
