Hosea 13:6Sefaria

כְּמַרְעִיתָם֙ וַיִּשְׂבָּ֔עוּ שָׂבְע֖וּ וַיָּ֣רׇם לִבָּ֑ם עַל־כֵּ֖ן שְׁכֵחֽוּנִי׃

A sudden shift from total dependence to material wealth carries a deep risk of ingratitude. For a nation that once relied entirely on divine support to survive in a harsh wilderness, stepping into a land of plenty can quickly erode their spiritual foundation.

In the desert, the Israelites were deeply connected to God and entirely dependent on Him. However, their reality changed completely upon entering the Promised Land [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that the prophet refers to their arrival in this new territory as entering a vast, open pasture [רש"י, מלבי"ם]. Transitioning from the wilderness into a settled environment, they were suddenly surrounded by wide grazing lands, rich soil, good fruits, and abundant wine [אבן עזרא, צאינה וראינה].

Tragically, the very abundance God provided became the cause of their rebellion [אברבנאל]. As the people ate from the goodness of the land and grew fully satisfied, a deep sense of pride took root. Their hearts became lifted with arrogance, fueled entirely by their newfound physical comfort [רש"י]. This feeling of power and material independence caused them to turn their backs on God. Instead of gratitude, they betrayed Him, sinking into centuries of sin and idol worship [ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה].

This tragic cycle of wealth leading to arrogance and forgetfulness unfolded exactly as they had been cautioned long before. The prophet's message directly echoes the ancient warnings given by Moses, who foresaw that physical satisfaction would blind the people. He predicted that as they grew comfortable and full, their hearts would swell with pride, causing them to completely forget the true source of their blessings [רד"ק, מלבי"ם, אברבנאל].
