הושע, פרק י״ג, פסוק י״ג

Hosea 13:13Sefaria

A powerful image of childbirth illustrates a moment of deep crisis and a missed opportunity for redemption. The severe pains of labor usually signal hope and the arrival of new life, but here they transform into a tragic symbol of stagnation and an inability to escape disaster. The intense suffering and troubles coming upon the nation are compared to these labor pains. However, this painful state also carries a sense of anticipation. Just as labor pains intensify right before birth, the growing troubles should ideally increase the hope for salvation and the rebirth of the nation out of its distress [מלבי״ם]. The crisis takes place at the very seat of birth, or the womb itself, a place defined by the breaking and pain experienced by a mother [מצודת ציון, רד״ק].

Despite this potential for salvation, the entire process fails because the child is not wise. Commentators offer different perspectives on what makes this child foolish. One view explains that this refers to later generations who watched their ancestors suffer the consequences of their sins but failed to learn the lesson. Instead of changing their ways and returning to God, they continued down the same damaging path [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. Furthermore, the nation lacks the foresight to anticipate the punishment that their actions will inevitably bring [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective takes the metaphor more directly, suggesting that the child about to be born will simply be as foolish as his ancestors and will tragically die immediately upon birth [אבן עזרא].

This fundamental lack of wisdom leads to a devastating outcome at the critical moment of birth. The primary approach among commentators is that when the time of punishment and trouble finally arrives, the nation will simply not have the strength to endure the suffering, and it will break [רש״י, שטיינזלץ]. Other commentators take the childbirth metaphor a step further, viewing this failure as a lack of urgency. A healthy baby naturally pushes forward to enter the world as quickly as possible. If the nation were wise, it would not linger in the crisis for even a moment. It would immediately rush to return to God and find rescue. However, because the people lack good deeds and merits, their own sins hold them back. They remain trapped in the womb at the breaking point, completely unable to be born and saved [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].
