שמואל ב, פרק כ״ב, פסוק ל״ד

II Samuel 22:34Sefaria

מְשַׁוֶּ֥ה (רגליו) [רַגְלַ֖י] כָּאַיָּל֑וֹת וְעַ֥ל בָּמֹתַ֖י יַעֲמִדֵֽנִי׃

God's providence equips a person with a rare combination of swift movement and unwavering stability, allowing them to overcome enemies and establish a secure position. Like a deer navigating treacherous terrain, a warrior receives divine gifts of physical lightness, speed, and balance. God elevates the warrior, setting them firmly upon high places, strong fortresses, and positions of greatness [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators focuses on the practical application of this remarkable agility, though perspectives differ on its exact purpose. Some explain that this swiftness allows a person to run rapidly and relentlessly pursue enemies [מצודת דוד]. In contrast, others suggest that this speed is crucial for moments of severe danger, enabling the fighter to escape swiftly to a safe haven where God grants them absolute security [רד״ק].

Beyond mere physical movement, this agility highlights extraordinary bravery. Many warriors remain on the battlefield simply because their heavy armor and weapons make it difficult to retreat. David, however, possessed the effortless mobility of a deer. Even though he had the physical capability to flee with ease, his firm stance on the high places reveals his true courage. He chose to stand resolute, never running from a fight [אברבנאל]. This unwavering posture mirrors deer that reach the highest mountain peaks and stand there with absolute, unshakable stability [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On a deeper, allegorical level, the imagery of the deer represents the profound connection between suffering and salvation. In nature, a deer experiences immense pain during birth until God provides a miracle that allows new life to emerge. Similarly, David endured deep sorrow and hardship throughout his life. These painful experiences were not without purpose; they were designed to purify and refine him. Ultimately, this lifelong refinement ensured that he would be elevated, allowing his kingdom to be firmly established and endure for his descendants forever [אהבת יהונתן].
