Looking back over the course of a lifetime requires deep, honest reflection. David presents his life as a continuous series of conscious choices to cling to what is good and actively avoid straying into evil. He testifies to a consistent loyalty to God’s guidance and leadership throughout his journey.
The primary approach among commentators is that true loyalty to God involves keeping His Commandments and walking the straight, proper path expected of a person. Any moral failure is seen as a deviation from this correct route [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and an abandonment of His instructions [מצודת דוד]. This lifelong commitment encompasses every aspect of a person's journey, representing a complete refusal to depart from God under any circumstance [רד״ק].
Beyond basic obedience, this loyalty is not merely a technical fulfillment of rules, but a call to imitate God’s own traits—just as He is merciful, a person must also be merciful. Furthermore, even if David stumbled in matters between himself and other people, such as the incident with Bathsheba, he maintained absolute perfection in his relationship with God and in his core faith [אברבנאל].
This idea is complemented by drawing a clear line between intentional wickedness and an unintentional mistake. While David’s overarching life trajectory was one of faithfulness, any failure on his part was the result of overwhelming pressure or a temporary weakness against his own impulses. It was never born out of wild behavior, foolishness, or a deliberate choice to abandon the right path [אהבת יהונתן].
On a practical and historical level, this steadfastness is clearly seen during David’s bitter struggle with King Saul. Even though Saul relentlessly pursued him, and the strict letter of the law would have permitted David to kill Saul in self-defense, David held back. His commitment to God meant conquering his natural instincts and respecting the fact that Saul had been anointed by God’s prophet. In the face of mortal danger, David chose to seek God and follow His will precisely, refusing to violate His command [נחל שורק, אברבנאל].
