שמואל ב, פרק כ״ב, פסוק מ״ג

II Samuel 22:43Sefaria

וְאֶשְׁחָקֵ֖ם כַּעֲפַר־אָ֑רֶץ כְּטִיט־חוּצ֥וֹת אֲדִקֵּ֖ם אֶרְקָעֵֽם׃

The complete defeat of a king's adversaries represents far more than a battlefield triumph; it is a final, sweeping victory that secures a peaceful future. This absolute downfall is understood not merely as a military success, but as an act of divine kindness. It ensures that enemies, such as Saul and Absalom, and their descendants will never rise again to cause harm. Their reduction to a lowly and despicable state is not just the work of human hands, but the direct result of God's providence guiding the victory [אברבנאל].

The physical defeat is depicted through intense actions of pounding, crumbling, and grinding the enemy into fine particles, similar to the pulverizing of spices [מצודת ציון, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To explain the totality of this suppression, commentators offer two complementary perspectives. One approach suggests a complete flattening and spreading across the ground, much like beating metal into thin sheets [מצודת ציון, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Another perspective views this as an aggressive trampling, where the defeated are forcefully crushed beneath the victor's feet [רש״י, רלב״ג].

The defeated are ultimately reduced to the status of earthly dust and street mud, discarded and stepped upon without any remaining value [מצודת דוד]. This dual imagery highlights a state of absolute weakness. While ordinary dry dirt can at least be gathered into a protective mound, and mud retains some useful moisture, the enemies are reduced to a substance entirely devoid of even these minor advantages [אהבת יהונתן]. A parallel account in the Book of Psalms adds another layer to this devastation, describing the dust as being carried by the wind rather than simply lying on the earth. This reveals that the enemy is not like wet, sticky soil, but rather like dust scattered by the wind without leaving a single trace, much like chaff blown away from a threshing floor [אברבנאל].
