King David recognizes that his military triumphs are not his own doing, but rather the direct result of God's involvement, both in granting him physical ability and in ensuring the downfall of his adversaries. The primary approach among commentators is that God metaphorically strapped or girded David with power and might, preparing him for the battlefield [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. Alternatively, this Divine empowerment is understood as God spreading and infusing strength throughout every single limb of David's body just before combat [רד״ק].

Equipped with this strength, those who rise up to rebel against the king are ultimately brought down to their knees [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. These adversaries are not necessarily foreign nations. Instead, the focus is on David's internal struggles within the nation of Israel. The rebels are rivals from his own home and people, such as King Saul, his son Absalom, and their followers who sought to overthrow him [אברבנאל].

The conflict with King Saul, in particular, was an essential phase in establishing David's dynasty. Based on the philosophical principle that any new reality can only emerge after a state of emptiness or absence, Saul represented the previous era. That prior state had to be completely dismantled and cleared away so that David's kingdom could be firmly and properly built [אהבת יהונתן].

Ultimately, David expresses a deep trust in God. He realizes that once God equips him with power for battle, there is no longer a need to pray for the defeat of his enemies. Their surrender becomes the natural and guaranteed outcome of the Divine strength he has already received [אלשיך].
