שמואל ב, פרק כ״ב, פסוק י״ז

II Samuel 22:17Sefaria

יִשְׁלַ֥ח מִמָּר֖וֹם יִקָּחֵ֑נִי יַֽמְשֵׁ֖נִי מִמַּ֥יִם רַבִּֽים׃

In moments of profound existential danger, when overwhelming disasters threaten to swallow a person whole, Divine providence actively steps in. A miraculous rescue unfolds as God reaches down from the heavens to pull the individual to safety.

The primary approach among commentators is that God sends His help [מצודת דוד], extending His hand [ביאור שטיינזלץ] to rescue the imperiled person from enemies and guide him along the proper path according to His will [רלב״ג]. This heavenly intervention is often carried out by angels dispatched specifically to extract the individual from distress [צאינה וראינה]. Alternatively, this rescue from above can be understood as protection against specific natural disasters. While enemies face destruction, God firmly grasps the individual from above to keep him from being swallowed by the earth during severe earthquakes [אברבנאל]. On a deeper, historical level, this heavenly intervention is tied to the very origins of the Davidic dynasty. God sent an angel from above to direct the fateful meeting between Judah and Tamar, ensuring the royal lineage would eventually come to be [אהבת יהונתן].

The experience of being saved is characterized by a forceful action of being drawn out and extracted from peril [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. This is frequently understood as a poetic metaphor for immense troubles [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה] or massive armies of enemies that threaten to wash over and drown a person like crashing ocean waves [מצודת דוד]. However, some view the threat literally, describing a physical rescue from the heavy rains and deadly floods that God unleashed upon the enemy [אברבנאל]. Another perspective connects this extraction from the depths to the ancestral devotion of King David's family. It recalls the bravery of Nahshon the son of Amminadab, who leaped into the Red Sea to sanctify God's name. When the guardian angel of the sea attempted to drown him, God personally pulled him from the waters. This intervention was driven by a clear, divine purpose: to preserve the sacred lineage that would ultimately give birth to the future king [אהבת יהונתן].
