After building an altar and offering sacrifices, David turns to God in prayer and receives an open, miraculous response. The divine answer arrives as a striking physical reality when fire descends directly from heaven onto the altar [מצודת דוד].

David does not light any natural fire on the altar himself. Instead, he relies completely on his prayer. God answers him by sending a heavenly fire to consume the burnt offerings and peace offerings, an event that closely mirrors how Elijah is answered on Mount Carmel [רלב״ג].

This miraculous fire falling from the sky acts as a clear sign of reconciliation. For David, it is absolute proof that God has accepted the sacrifices and looks upon him with favor [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
