A family tree often tells a story of survival and continuity through dark times. During the period of destruction and exile, a specific line of leaders formed the crucial link between the eras of the two Temples.

At the close of the First Temple period, Seraiah stood as the final High Priest. His leadership came to a violent end when he was killed by Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon, during the exile of King Zedekiah. Because the nation was cast into exile, Seraiah's son, Jehozadak, never actually served as High Priest himself.

Despite this break in active service, the priestly dynasty survived. The family reclaimed its historical role in the following generation when Jehozadak's son, Joshua, took up the mantle to serve as the High Priest at the beginning of the Second Temple era [מצודת דוד].
