I Chronicles 5:36Sefaria

Amidst a long, continuous genealogy of priests, the historical record suddenly pauses to offer special praise, singling out Azariah as a key figure in the Temple. This sudden spotlight presents both a historical and a logical puzzle. Zadok was the first High Priest when Solomon established the Temple, not his descendant Azariah. Furthermore, many great priests served in the Temple over the centuries, prompting the question of why Azariah receives the exclusive distinction as the primary one who served as priest [רש״י, רלב״ג, רד״ק].

To resolve this, the primary approach among commentators is to view this distinction not as a claim to being the first priest, but as a testament to immense personal sacrifice. According to this perspective, this Azariah is the High Priest who lived generations later during the reign of King Uzziah. When the king attempted to enter the sanctuary to burn incense against the law, Azariah did not show favoritism. He fiercely protected the honor of the priesthood and stopped the king, putting his own life at risk. Because of his brave defense of the Temple's holiness, he is uniquely honored as the one who truly acted as a priest [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

Another perspective maintains the chronological order of Solomon's era, suggesting that Azariah earned this distinction through extraordinary longevity. In this view, Azariah was still young when the Temple was built, but he lived an exceptionally long life. He served continuously as High Priest all the way into the times of Kings Uzziah and Hezekiah. His unmatched years of dedicated service ultimately earned him his unique title [רד״ק].

A further historical explanation suggests that Azariah, initially an official, stepped into the role of High Priest immediately after the Temple was built and Zadok's service ended. This promotion was due either to his exceptional skills or his close relationship with King Solomon [רלב״ג]. From this moment forward, Azariah and his descendants formed the core dynasty of the most renowned High Priests throughout the entire First Temple era. This prominent lineage spanned twelve priests, beginning with Zadok and concluding with Seraiah at the time of the Temple's destruction [רש״י, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
