I Chronicles 5:22Sefaria

כִּֽי־חֲלָלִ֤ים רַבִּים֙ נָפָ֔לוּ כִּ֥י מֵהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ תַחְתֵּיהֶ֖ם עַד־הַגֹּלָֽה׃ {פ}

A decisive military victory and the lasting occupation of enemy lands were made possible entirely through divine intervention. This raises a practical question: how did a relatively small Israelite force manage to defeat and capture an overwhelming group of a hundred thousand people? The success was due to God's direct involvement in the battle. Because the victory came from God, a massive number of enemy fighters fell in combat. The sheer scale of this defeat, combined with the clear presence of divine assistance, struck deep fear into the hearts of the survivors. Terrified, they surrendered and allowed themselves to be taken captive without any resistance [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Following this triumph, the Israelites took over the territory of the defeated tribes and settled in their place. This might seem to contradict earlier details mentioning that the Israelites carried the captives and spoils away. However, a portion of the Israelite warriors remained behind to populate the newly conquered land, while the rest returned to their original homeland with the captives and the wealth [רד״ק]. The Israelites maintained their presence in this new territory for a very long period. Their settlement ended only when they were eventually forced into exile by the king of Assyria [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
