I Kings 13:26Sefaria

News of a tragic and unnatural death on the road reaches the very man who set the events in motion. The old prophet hears the reports and immediately steps forward to identify the victim and explain the miraculous scene to the bewildered onlookers. Because he personally prophesied the man's demise [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and knew the exact route he was taking [מלבי״ם], the old prophet knows precisely who the fallen man is, even though the crowd does not.

He explains to the people that this was no ordinary animal attack. The lion did not strike out of hunger but acted purely as a divine messenger sent to carry out a decree from God [מלבי״ם]. The beast functioned not as a standard wild animal, but as a spiritual force representing the divine attribute of mercy. This explains why the lion merely subdued and killed the prophet without mauling or consuming the remains. This same divine mercy ensured that the donkey was left completely unharmed, preserving the animal so it could later carry the prophet's body [אלשיך].

Even though the fallen man was fundamentally righteous, his remains are reduced to the status of a carcass, reflecting the harsh reality that he died as a punishment for his sin. Yet, the miraculous sight of the lion standing guard over the intact body without destroying it serves as a lasting testament to his true, underlying virtue [אלשיך]. Ultimately, the entire event unfolded exactly as God had spoken and decreed concerning him [מצודת דוד].
