This wonder functions as a clear guarantee that the prophet's message is true and will be fulfilled [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The event takes place on that very day, serving as immediate proof [רש"י, מלבי"ם, אברבנאל]. It consists of two miraculous actions: the altar breaks apart entirely on its own, and the ashes resting upon it spill to the ground [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond providing instant verification, the specific details of the miracle carry deep symbolic meaning regarding events yet to unfold. The breaking of the altar points to its ultimate destruction, signaling that all sacrifices upon it will completely stop [מלבי"ם, אברבנאל]. The spilling of the ashes represents the fate awaiting the priests of idol worship. Just as the ashes fall to the earth, the bones of these priests will eventually be burned on the altar, and their remains will be tossed aside in disgrace rather than receiving a respectful burial [מלבי"ם, אברבנאל].
