I Kings 13:24Sefaria

A prophet meets a sudden and unusual end on the road, struck down by a wild animal in a scene that completely defies the laws of nature. As the man of God travels on his donkey, he is killed by a lion, and his lifeless body is left lying on the path. However, a highly unnatural scene unfolds. Both the donkey and the lion remain standing peacefully beside the body. Commentators agree that this situation completely contradicts natural animal behavior. Had the lion been driven by hunger, it would have instinctively consumed the man or attacked the donkey. Instead, a profound miracle takes place. The lion acts strictly as an agent of God, killing the prophet without consuming him or harming the donkey, and then remains in place like an honor guard.

The specific choice of a lion to carry out this punishment is highly deliberate. Had the prophet been gored to death by a bull, Jeroboam might have claimed that the golden calf that was worshipped was responsible for the death. Therefore, it was essential that a lion be the instrument of this punishment [חומת אנך].

The primary goal of this public, miraculous punishment from God is to make the sin and its consequence widely known, serving as a powerful moral lesson for all who witness it. Furthermore, this striking event is intended as a wake-up call for Jeroboam. The hope is that upon seeing the prophet punished so severely for his transgression, Jeroboam might recognize the gravity of his own actions and turn away from his evil path [רלב״ג].
