I Kings 13:28Sefaria

A lifeless body lies on the road, flanked by two animals that would normally never stand peacefully side by side. This miraculous and unnatural scene of a lion and a donkey remaining completely still next to a fallen prophet is designed to deliver a clear divine message. There is a general consensus that this peaceful gathering proves the event is not a random animal attack, but a specific act of providence from God. Had the lion attacked out of hunger, it would have consumed the body. Had it struck out of wild instinct or rage, it would have also torn the donkey apart. Instead, the lion's restrained behavior shows it acted strictly as an agent of God, fulfilling a divine decree to punish the prophet for his sin [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, אברבנאל].

The unusual sight serves as public proof to anyone passing by that the death of the man of God is not a natural accident, but a precise punishment guided by God [אברבנאל]. The miracle extends to the specific actions of both animals. The lion acts as a guard over the body, ensuring it remains intact for a proper and respectful burial [מלבי״ם]. The donkey's behavior is equally supernatural; rather than fleeing in terror from an apex predator, it stays firmly in place so it can eventually carry the prophet's body away [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, the donkey is spared from the lion's teeth out of respect for the prophet who rode it, revealing that animals can receive protection and reward in this world simply through their association with humans [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

A sharp moral lesson emerges from the scene. If an irrational beast like a lion can suppress its basic nature to completely obey God's command, the man of God certainly should have been careful to follow God's word and avoid sinning [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the event captures a profound duality: it displays the prophet's severe punishment for his wrongdoing, while simultaneously honoring his underlying righteousness through the miraculous preservation of his body [רד״ק].
