I Kings 14:9Sefaria

The prophet's harsh rebuke frames Jeroboam's rebellion as an unprecedented low point in the history of the monarchy. The declaration that Jeroboam acted worse than anyone before him points directly to his predecessors, Solomon and Rehoboam [מצודת דוד]. This severe comparison serves as proof that King Solomon never personally engaged in idol worship. If Solomon had actively participated in such practices, Jeroboam’s actions could not be considered more severe [רלב״ג].

The fundamental difference between the kings lies in their motives. Solomon merely turned a blind eye and failed to stop his foreign wives from their practices out of his love for them. Jeroboam, however, actively created idols for himself, crafting molten images from melted metal Furthermore, he did so with the explicit intention of rebelling and angering God [מלבי״ם]. The prophet does not focus on the exact theological nuances of the golden calves Jeroboam set up in Bethel and Dan; instead, he simply presents them as outright, undeniable idol worship [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Jeroboam's complete disconnect from God is captured by the vivid image of him casting God behind his back. The commentators agree that this represents a person throwing an object behind their body so they will never have to look at it or engage with it again. It illustrates a deliberate and total disregard for God and His commandments Ultimately, while Solomon sinned, he never abandoned the worship of God. Jeroboam, in stark contrast, turned his back entirely, removing the worship of God from his life completely [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].
