I Kings 14:14Sefaria

God's judgment upon a corrupt royal dynasty is absolute and final. The prophecy of doom seals the fate of Jeroboam's family, declaring their complete destruction. To execute this severe punishment, God will raise up a new king from within the kingdom of Israel itself. This ruler will act as a divine messenger with the clear purpose of wiping out Jeroboam's line [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This heavy penalty will not be delayed for distant generations; it will strike the current members of the household without mercy [רלב״ג].

The prophecy emphasizes the timing and totality of this ruin, though commentators offer different perspectives on exactly how the destruction unfolds. The primary approach among commentators is that the ruin is an absolute, sweeping destruction that crosses the boundaries of time. It targets all family members who are currently alive, while also extending to any future offspring born to the family from this point forward, ensuring that not a single person survives [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].

Alternatively, the impending doom can be understood as a description of a severe escalation. The ultimate disaster will truly begin on the day the new king takes power, making Jeroboam's current crisis merely the beginning of his downfall [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From this perspective, the present suffering is so light and insignificant that it pales in comparison to the much greater and harsher troubles destined to strike Israel in the future [רד״ק].

A more specific perspective ties this timeline directly to the tragic state of Jeroboam's sick, dying son. According to this view, the immediate doom refers to this specific child who will end his life today. Because he is the only member of the household in whom any merit or goodness was found, his passing marks a turning point. Once this single worthy son dies, the house of Jeroboam will be left completely devoid of any merit, making the total loss of hope and the eventual destruction of the rest of the family entirely inevitable [אלשיך].
