I Kings 14:8Sefaria

God's rebuke to Jeroboam highlights a deep divide between the immense kindness he received and his ultimate moral failure. Because God tore the kingdom away from the royal house of David and handed it directly to Jeroboam, this extraordinary gift should have inspired him to reach a profound level of righteousness [מלבי״ם]. Instead, Jeroboam failed to elevate himself, falling drastically short of the standard set by his predecessor.

This failure is evident in two primary areas. In the realm of practical and spiritual devotion, David achieved a complete harmony of action and thought. He strictly observed God's commandments in his daily actions, while also following Him with a pure, internal intention and a whole heart [מלבי״ם].

On a personal level, the stark difference between the two kings lies in their character. David was defined by his deep humility. Even at the absolute peak of his royal greatness and prosperity, he consciously humbled himself as a devoted servant. In sharp contrast, Jeroboam was consumed by arrogance and pride. These destructive traits not only poisoned his leadership but ultimately caused his total downfall, completely removing him from the world [חומת אנך].
