The severe drought gripping the region reaches such a critical point that the king and his highest court official are forced to personally embark on a search mission. To maximize their efforts, they divide the familiar territory into two distinct sectors. Each man takes responsibility for exploring one half of the land, patrolling the area in hopes of finding any remaining water sources and grass [ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה].

Beyond the practical necessity of splitting up, this physical separation carries a much deeper spiritual significance. As they part ways to travel alone, their separate routes symbolize the profound moral divide between the two men. The king stubbornly continues to cling to his wicked ways, while his minister walks a completely different, unique path, remaining steadfast and loyal to God [מלבי״ם].
